While acne is an irritating condition, not all cases are requiring of a dermatologist’s care. Over-the-counter acne products can be just as effective as a prescribed treatment if your skin is cooperative. However, it can be nearly impossible to decipher which product is applicable for your skin. Since there are so many variations of acne treating products, we’ve broken it down by the main ingredients to give you an idea of what to look for in your skin care product.
Probably the most common and versatile ingredient is benzoyl peroxide. This ingredient is placed in topical treatments and cleansers, and has been proven effective on mild to moderate acne. Benzoyl peroxide works by exfoliating the dead skin cells on the skin that become infected and cause acne breakouts. It can be used to prevent acne after it has been cleared up, but may cause dry skin if used too frequently. It has been reported to bleach clothing and materials, so take caution during and shortly after application.
Salicylic Acid is also commonly found in acne treating products. It is placed in ointments and creams as a peeling agent. Salicylic Acid’s use in acne treatment medications is primarily to discard dead skin cells to prevent them from clogging pores and causing irritation. You should avoid using any other drying agent or abrasive skin treatment while using a product containing salicylic acid.
Other agents may be combined in your acne treatment, namely resorcinol and sulphur. These ingredients are used as a peel to remove the dead layer of skin containing dead skin cells and contaminants that cause acne. Sulphur may also be combined with other ingredients but is rarely used alone because of its strong smell.
Ultimately, it is going to take some trial and error to determine the over the counter product that is best for your mild to moderate acne. When trying a new product, allow a few weeks, sometimes up to six or more, for it to completely take effect. Never use more than one product at a time; and if you experience an adverse reaction, stop using that product immediately. If your acne persists and you can’t seem to find a treatment product that works, don’t hesitate to set up a consultation with a dermatologist. Everyone’s skin is different, and he may know which over the counter or prescription acne product will best treat your skin.
